The Westin Ottawa has received the designation of 5 Keys as it exemplifies the highest standards of environmental and social responsibility in relation to meetings and convention facilities. Green Key Global and The MPI Foundation Canada have partnered for the creation of the Green Key Meetings program, a comprehensive assessment tool for hotel and resort properties that host meetings of any size. It was co-created by planner members of Meeting Professionals International and reflects the needs of the business event industry.

The Westin Ottawa has a number of green meeting initiatives at the hotel driven by its Green Committee. This group meets regularly and focuses on incorporating environmental and social responsibility throughout all areas of operations at the hotel. The team has implemented a waste management policy for conference exhibitors called “Leave Nothing Behind”. The aim of this policy is to prevent waste from being left behind by conference exhibitors and to encourage exhibitors to recycle on-site or find ways for the materials to be reused without negatively impacting the environment. As well the team started a carbon off-set program for meeting planners giving the option for planners to off-set the carbon produced from meetings and events. The hotel team undertakes regular energy and water audits as it works toward Starwood Hotels’ 30-20-20 mission to save 30 per cent in energy and 20 per cent in water by 2020. The hotel provides a Meeting Impact Report to clients as well as tips to aide in planning an environmently friendly event.

“We are thrilled to have earned the five-key distinction from Green Key Global, validating the significant efforts our team has taken to build a world class green meeting program,” said John Jarvis, General Manager, The Westin Ottawa. “Increasingly meeting planners are looking for sustainable solutions when looking for venues to host events. With the leadership of our Green Committee we have taken tremendous steps to incorporate sustainability within all aspects of our operations.”

Green Key Meetings is a comprehensive assessment tool for eco-friendly resorts and hotels that hold meetings of any size. It is designed to provide travel, meeting and conference Planners with a sense of a hotel’s level of commitment to environment issues. Green Key Meetings ranks venues on a level of 1 to 5 keys, with 5 being the highest ranking. Keys are awarded based on how properties perform in six conference and meeting areas: Core Areas (carbon, energy, water, waste, air quality), Communication (information, training), Activities (purchasing, auditing, community), People (health), Exhibitions, and Audio/Visual. The Green Key Meetings properties and rankings are listed at www.greenkeyglobal.com/greenkeymeetings.asp.

Last year The Westin Ottawa achieved a 5 Green Key rating through the Green Key Eco-Rating Program. The 5 Green Key rating demonstrates that The Westin Ottawa exemplifies the highest standards of environmental and social responsibility throughout all areas of operations. This designation is attributed to energy and water savings at the hotel and a comprehensive environmental vision.
