Geneva has retained the top spot as the most expensive city in the world to order a club sandwich, at an average of $35.83 (CAD), according to research released today by Hotels.com™. Using the classic hotel staple of a chicken, bacon, egg, lettuce and mayonnaise sandwich as a barometer of affordability, the Hotels.com Club Sandwich Index (CSI) offers travellers an indication of the costs associated with their destination of choice.
Now in its third year, the Index reflects not only changes in the actual price of a club sandwich across the globe but also the effect of currency fluctuations. The CSI average price is calculated from the real prices paid by guests for a Club Sandwich in 30 hotels in either the capital or an important tourist city in the 28 countries surveyed, across five, four and three-star categories. In total, 840 hotels globally were included.
Amongst additional Canadian cities surveyed, Montreal held onto its title of most expensive club sandwich at $16.67, just slightly lower than 19th globally-ranked Russia, followed by Vancouver at $15.86. Both cities saw an average increase in price in 2014. Toronto, ranked 21st globally at $15.45 and Calgary ($14.27) both dropped in average club sandwich prices this year. Halifax remained the most affordable at $13.13, approximately the same price as 25th globally-ranked Bangkok. Note, there are no five-star hotels in Calgary or Halifax, so average prices represent three and four-star hotel properties only.
Gastronomic hub, Paris, held on to the number two spot with a new average of $32.27, followed by Helsinki which knocked Oslo out of the top three with $26.77 following an increase on the 2013 average cost in the Finnish capital.
New Delhi remained the cheapest destination for a club sandwich, with an average of just $9.65, although Mexico City was also in the $10 range at $10.75. Meanwhile, Olso experienced the greatest decrease in its Club Sandwich price, falling from $27.47 in 2013 to $26.16 in 2014.
