When it comes to teambuilding, each person often has their own interpretation of what they envision teambuilding to be. One of the most important steps in determining which teambuilding program or activity is ideal for your group is to determine what the desired outcome is you are striving to achieve.
For example, is the goal of the teambuilding program or activity to simply provide some entertainment or an experience for a group of people whom already know each other or to introduce a new group of people to each other and encourage networking and build stronger relationships? Many organizations also work with teambuilding experts to assist them in working through challenges or changes that may be occurring within their organization.
Regardless of the situation or goal, I believe that it is critical to take the time to have an open, in depth initial conversation with my clients when they express an interest in teambuilding. During this conversation, we focus on their goals and desired outcomes as well as other key areas including the demographics of the group and the current dynamics between the group. I also believe it is important to learn about the organization’s mission statement, values and culture so that we ensure we incorporate these components into the teambuilding program wherever possible and also be aware of any challenges the organization may be going through so we can be sensitive to these issues.
Once the desired outcome is confirmed, the next step is to discuss logistics. For example, what is the length of time that has been allocated for the teambuilding program? Does the group have just one hour or have they dedicated a full afternoon for the teambuilding program or activity? Another key area that needs to be discussed is budget. When it comes to teambuilding programs and activities, my focus is to provide suggestions to my clients that fit within their desired outcomes, timeline and budget.
